Get to Mildura safe and sound

There are several TAC Pause Stop sites operating across Victoria to encourage motorists to pull over, take a break and recharge so everyone can get to their destination safely. Here’s a few helpful tips:

  • Plan a pause stop from the road every two hours
  • Take a 15 min powernap if you feel drowsy
  • Share the driving when possible
  • Grab a coffee to recharge
  • Don't travel more than 8-10 hours a day

The Mildura Visitor Information Centre has been designated by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Victorian Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) as one of 15 premium Pause Stop locations across Victoria. The Centre is the perfect place to stop and take a break, with plenty of amenities available including an on-site café. The helpful, informative staff will assist you with all your visitor servicing needs.

Visit the TAC website for more information.

(Very) Early Morning: You're going on an ad-van-ture!

Travel time: Approx. 6.5-7 hour drive
Distance: 550 km

Rise and shine - it’s an early start for you (literally). Leaving the Victorian capital behind, jump onto the Calder, with the van in tow, and begin your journey heading north-west. Stretching 550km, you’ll drive through several quaint, small country towns on your way to Mildura. Make sure you have our Escape to the Country road trip itinerary up your sleeve. This is your bible for everything you can see and do on your journey. Get a taste of history, wine, and culture (even some of the best vanilla slices you’ll ever have) all in one. But remember, make sure you press pause on your road trip and take a break at least every two hours. On your way, pop into the Loddon Visitor Information Centre, a premium pause stop location.

Late afternoon: Are we there yet?

Travel time: 11 mins by car (from Mildura CBD)

After a long drive, you’ve finally made it to Mildura – hooray! It’ll be around 3-4pm in the afternoon when you make your way to Apex Riverbeach Holiday Park, which will be your home away from home for the next three nights. Situated right on the banks of the Murray, this holiday park is only a short drive from the CBD, but far enough away for you to relax, unwind and take in some serenity. After checking in, set up your van on one of Apex’s uninterrupted riverview sites. You’ll also be expecting a delivery from Wildside Outdoors, who you have organised bike hire through. With several paths, trails and tracks for you and your bikes to enjoy, there’s no simpler way to travel. Once you’ve settled in and you’re all refreshed, get ready for a great night in town.

Held on the first and third Saturday of the month, the market is one of our region’s most beloved institutions. It’s imperative that you don’t eat before you visit because you won’t want to miss out on tucking into brekkie served by the local Rotary Club. Make sure to also carry a hessian bag with you and fill it with fresh, local produce. It is essential for this evening.

Only a short distance from here is a newly opened community space, Powerhouse Place. Here you can explore works by local artists at the Mildura Riverfront Art Gallery or check out Spark, a social enterprise providing opportunities for people with disability to work in a retail environment – a great initiative if you ask us.

Sit back and relax while you take in spectacular views from the Murray aboard the Paddle Vessel Rothbury (built in 1881). If you’re feeling a bit peckish, head to Bobby + Me for a cuppa. Treat yourself to one of their delicious sweets too.

If you happen to have rods handy, this place is regarded as one of Mildura’s best fishing spots. Try your luck and lure the famous Murray Cod.

Evening: An epic sunset awaits...

Travel time: 14 mins by car
Distance: 10km

By now you’ve returned to your riverside campsite at Apex and whipped up a campfire for an early feed with all the delicious local produce from the farmer’s market. Wash everything down with a local wine you’ve picked up from the cellar door – remember to drink responsibly.

At around 8pm, finish off your day by venturing downstream to Blandowski Walk & Merbein Lookout. The highest viewpoint in the region, it is here where you will catch the sun on its way down. If you’re lucky, be wowed by a vibrant colour display that Mildura’s sunsets are renowned for.

On your next visit to our city, you may like to come along and see a performance at the centre’s state-of-the-art theatre. As you leave, stop to appreciate Sculpture Park, a unique part of Australia’s art history. Located on the lawns, it currently houses 12 contemporary sculptures.

By now you’re due for some R&R. Upon returning to the holiday park, perhaps a dip in the river or reading a book by the riverside sounds like a plan.

Evening: Have chopsticks at the ready

Travel time: 4 mins by car

Complete your day with a visit to one of Mildura’s best dining institutions, Andy’s Kitchen. The family-run restaurant produces a menu with unparalleled freshness and flavour. Our favourites are the signature crispy roasted pork belly and massaman lamb cutlet curry. You won't be disappointed when you dine here, but be prepared to wear some loose pants…
