Sip Back & Relax

24 May 2023 -

Swirl, sniff and sip your way through our region’s fabulous cellar doors and breweries.

There’s something super intoxicating about visiting a cellar door or brewery (drinking copious amounts of alcoholic beverages in the middle of the day might have something to do with it) and we’re not short of amazing options around the Mildura region. The best part? You’ll be supporting local businesses simply by having a good time.

Take your tastebuds across the river to Trentham Estate Winery & Restaurant (6531 Sturt Highway, Trentham Cliffs NSW), a multi award-winning family-owned winery which was established a little over thirty years ago by the Murphy family. Take a seat in the restaurant or alfresco on the balcony, order a platter or lunch and take in the beautiful views of the Murray River. Afterwards, head to the cellar door to taste a couple of the quality, award winning, varietal wines.

Next, make your way back into Mildura and take a short drive out to Cappa Stone Wines (107 Twenty Second Street, Sunny Cliffs), a locally-owned and operated boutique winery. Settle in at the rustic old-world winery and cellar door and try a couple of the award-winning wines. The winery uses open fermentation vats and basket presses, and age their wines in the finest of oak barrels to produce a range of super premium wines. Purchase a few to enjoy or gift to friends and family.

Sunraysia Cellar Door

Another stop, another unique winery. Call into Vanden Estate (38 Dewry Avenue, Irymple), meet the people and hear the stories behind the ‘family label’ series. On the Estate, the red wine varieties Grenache and Durif and a new emerging variety called Grillo sourced from Sicily, are grown using the traditional old-world practices of hand pruning, hand picking, low irrigation and no trellising, to produce low cropping high-intensity wines. Enjoy tastings along with a cheese platter, trio of dips or pizza. An extensive menu is also available.

Continue your wine tour at the Chateau Mildura Winery (191 Belar Avenue, Irymple). The founders of the Mildura and Renmark Irrigation Colonies, the Chaffey brothers, planted 150 acres of wine grapes and established Chateau Mildura, giving birth to an industry that in the Sunraysia and Riverland areas has grown to produce more than 50% of Australia’s wine grapes. Tour the museum and taste the boutique range of wines made on a small scale from with varieties of grapes from the Mildura region. They employ a unique mix of both old and modern techniques and technology in the winemaking operation. Again, purchase a few to add to your own collection and for your friends and family.

Venture into the cellar door at Capogreco Winery Estate (3080 Riverside Avenue, Mildura). A boutique, family-run winery since 1976, Capogreco produces fine aged table and fortified wine which are a blend of Italian and Australian Riverland influences. The Capogreco family history in viticulture and winemaking goes as far back as 1821 in Calabria, Italy.

Before making your way into the CBD, stop by the family-owned winery Oak Valley Estate Winery (3055 Deakin Avenue, Mildura South). Using traditionalist winemaking methods as well as modern techniques to produce their products, Oak Valley produces wines with a unique character, with every step of the production process from the vineyard to the bottle handled personally. Try some of the less common table wines such as Grenache, Muscatel and Black Muscatel and pick up some unique produce to take home – from jams and preserves to vincotto and olive oils that are all grown and processed on the property.

Open: Friday & Saturday, 10am - 6pm or by appointment. T: 0418 570 064
