Start your day at the Mildura Visitor Information Centre where you will find ‘Broken Hill’ by renowned artist, Pro Hart. Inspired by his life in the outback, the lush colours, sense of space and spiritual quality will astound you. Wander around the rest of the Centre and take in the mosaic totem poles, ‘Columns of Life’ sculpture and other artworks. On your way out, admire the untitled sculpture by Dimitri Nickas, nicknamed the ‘Whirly Wind’ by locals.

Take a short drive to The Studio (37-39 Jacaranda Street, Red Cliffs). Established by Red Cliffs ceramist and sculptor Renae Pennicuik, this space hosts exhibitions showcasing contemporary works from local, national and international artists. If you’re an avid art lover, participate in a creative art workshop run by a resident artist who will share their expertise and art making skills with you.

Next stop is the Arts Mildura Hub (39 Langtree Avenue, Mildura) where you can explore the breadth of the region’s arts scene. You’ll be treated to a range of works from local artists across a variety of mediums. There are also artist studios on site so you may just bump into the next star as they create their masterpiece.

Down the road you’ll find Workspace 3496 (2/38 Indi Avenue, Red Cliffs), one of the newest editions to the region’s growing art scene. The gallery was created to showcase local and emerging artists and makers. Explore the diverse range of exhibitions, workshops, art classes, residencies and events on offer at this creative space.

Drop into Stefano’s Café to view the intimate space featuring works by local and visiting artists and then enjoy a brunch of local produce served outdoors under the vines.

Insider Tips

Make your way across Deakin Avenue to Mildura’s newest gallery, NAP Contemporary (90 Deakin Avenue, Mildura). This extensive art space is filled with a diverse and eclectic selection of contemporary art from national and international artists. Find yourself mesmerised by the gallery’s collection of Aboriginal artworks sourced from Central Australia and the Top End.

Jump in the car and head over the river to New South Wales. First stop is the old Magenta Station Shearing Shed, located in the picturesque Australian Inland Botanic Gardens in Buronga. Here the Magenta Artists gather each Wednesday to paint. The group welcomes visitors as well as visiting artists, so why not bring your paints and brushes and join in.

Continue on to the Barkindji Wiimpatya Murra Centre, an Aboriginal art gallery in Dareton. Have a chat to the resident artists about how they work and hear the stories behind what they create. The Centre is also home to the Ridgy Didge Record Breaker, the largest playable didgeridoo recorded in Australia.

Head back to Mildura to the Mildura Riverfront Gallery, a showcase of talented award-winning working artists highlighting the uniqueness of the Mildura area. This is a place where artists gather to share ideas, skills and knowledge. Perhaps you’ll find the perfect memento of your trip amongst the impressive range of pieces for sale.

From there, pick up a coffee or juice from Shippy’s Café and meander along the Mildura Riverfront until you get to ‘Memories’ the mosaic artwork and sculpture by internationally renowned Kurnu Barkandji artist, Badger Bates. The images on the seating depict a meeting place, shaped by Badger’s memories of the people and landscape of Mildura with inspiration drawn from the Mediterranean, including Spanish artist and architect, Antoni Gaudi. If you missed the earlier coffee, take a seat at Café 1909 for afternoon tea overlooking the mighty Murray River.

You’re in for a treat as you head to the Mildura Arts Centre and Rio Vista Historic House. Here you’ll see the permanent collection, often referred to as one of Victoria’s best kept secrets. It features the largest single collection of paintings by Anglo-Irish artist, Sir William Orpen, a pastel by Edgar Degas, and works by Sir Frank Brangwyn. Take time to stroll through the rest of the gallery spaces to immerse yourself in the latest visiting exhibition. From there it’s a walk across the park to the Rio Vista Historic House. Learn about the history of the Chaffey brothers and their contribution to the region as you wander through the restored house.

As you leave, stop to appreciate Sculpture Park, a unique part of Australia’s art history. Located on the lawns of the Mildura Arts Centre, it currently houses 12 sculptures including Ron Robertson-Swann’s ‘Beethoven’, Simon Hopkinson and Gary Willis’ work ‘Art’ and John Robinson’s ‘Mortality’. These works were produced as part of the Mildura Sculpture Triennials which began in 1961 and was the first event to promote and encourage large scale contemporary sculpture.
